A good decision

THE public fully supports the decision of government authorities to retain the “Alert Level 2” classification of heavily-populated Metropolitan Manila from February 16 to 28.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) made the decision despite the drop in the number of COVID cases in the region.

However, the IATF placed two cities and five provinces under the more restrictive “Alert Level 3” status, according to acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles.

These are the cities of Iloilo (Visayas) and Zamboanga (Mindanao) and the provinces of Guimaras, Iloilo, Davao de Oro, Davao Occidental and South Cotabato.

Like the National Capital Region (NCR), the rest of the country are now under “Alert Level 2.”

Described by various quarters as “a good decision,” the issuance of the latest alert levels is seen to prevent the renewed surge in COVID-19 cases in impoverished Philippines.

“Sa totoo lang, nakakabahala talaga ang mga nakikitang pagsisiksikan ng mga taong dumadalo sa mga political rally ng mga kandidato sa darating na May 9 polls,” a voter said.

Not only that. Many supporters of candidates and political parties are seen not wearing masks during rallies, meetings and marches, according to irate residents.

The official campaign period for national candidates started on February 8, while local candidates may begin campaigning on March 25, which is 45 days before election day.

We hope that concerned government authorities will do everything to ensure the health and safety of the people while the pandemic is still raging in the Philippines.
