Tess LardizabalYOUTH is often associated with inexperience or even recklessness.

Not so in the case of Prime Energy Resources Development BV (Prime Energy) of tycoon Enrique Razon Jr.

Prime Energy has turned a year old but make no mistake—it’s far too experienced in the energy sector that its young age would seem to be unbelievable.

After delving into the energy sector by acquiring a controlling stake in the Malampaya gas field, Prime Energy is already showing maturity in efficiency and leadership.

The stream of milestones that started 22 years ago when the Malampaya field started to yield the Philippines’ natural gas, the achievements continued to pile up under Prime Energy.

The Malampaya gas field continued operations by an all-Filipino team that showed it was not only skillful in running the energy facilities, but did so at a level not seen in the gas field’s 20-year history.

Prime Energy showed how seamlessly it can work with its Malampaya partners UC38 LLC and state-owned PNOC, bringing with it a corporate social responsibility campaign and its hawk-eyed focus on safety, honesty, integrity, respect, value creation and tenacity.

In retaining the all-Filipino team that has been running Malampaya for more than 20 years, Prime Energy showed faith in our people. But it did not stop there. By adding more Filipino experts to the team, Prime Energy showed belief in a bright energy future with the Filipino at the helm.

That the contract to operate Malampaya got a new lease on life after its extension by 15 years is a testament to the reputation that Prime Energy brought to the table—one of dependability.

Allowed to operate Malampaya until 2039, Prime Energy is being given the green light to run its engine at full throttle and harness this dependability to carve a self-sufficient energy future for the Filipino.

It has committed to continue producing economy-enhancing indigenous gas to keep the present stable and also to develop new gas wells near the Malampaya field to bring a secure energy future.

Malampaya’s record is in itself a display window of Filipino excellence.

For 22 years, it has been successfully implementing its Goal Zero campaign—no accidents, leaks across all Malampaya operations and Prime Energy is now holding this safety record aloft to constantly remind itself and the entire nation of what is achievable through sheer dependability.

The successful, accident-free maintenance of Malampaya just last February isn’t just another plaque for Prime Energy. It is also evidence of what Filipino excellence and efficiency can achieve.

This excellence also became the bright beam that guided foreign companies to Prime Energy’s arms.

In partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co, the Italian firm Eni S.p.a and the Austrian government, Prime Energy will bring condensate for production at the Malampaya facilities. This positions Prime Energy as an all-Filipino company that not only displayed capacity to meet international industry standards but also skills to exceed these.

But Prime Energy isn’t making waves only internationally. In the domestic front, the Filipino company is performing tasks consistent with its CSR goas of being a “good neighbor” to all.

Its most recent voluntary effort to help in the Mindoro oil spill cleanup was barely mentioned in the news but played a key role in hastening the cleanup work by the Philippine Coast Guard, which found its job made easier with oil spill cleanup materials and food for volunteers and villagers donated by Prime Energy to communities reeling from the environmental accident.

Maturity. Prime Energy is showing that it’s not about the age.
