UCFC eyes better showing in AFC
REIGNING Philippines Football League champion United City FC is looking forward for a better showing in this year’s AFC Champions League.
Making its second straight appearance in the continent’s biggest club football championship, UCFC was drawn in Group G in the East region together with Thailand’s BG Pathum United FC, South Korea’s Jeonnam Dragons FC and Australia’s Melbourne City FC.
UCFC President and Co-Founder Eric Gottschalk was satisfied the way things turned out in yesterday’s draw ceremony.
“We have a very balanced but competitive group and avoiding a team from China and Japan is definitely not a bad draw,” said Gottschalk.
“I’m personally looking forward to the match-up with Thailand as this is the competitive level what we are always measuring ourselves against,” he added.
UCFC though will miss naturalized striker Bienve Marañon in the ACL which will kick off on April 15.
In its ACL debut last year, UCFC placed third in Group I with one win and one draw to show.
BG Pathum is the current Thai League 1 kings, while Melbourne City, which is making its ACL debut this year, is the defending champion in the top-tier A-League.
Making a comeback in the ACL after 14 years, the Jeonnam Dragons compete in the in K League 2, South Korea’s second division football.
