Traffic czar

PEOPLE acknowledge that traffic congestion in Metropolitan Manila (MM) and other urban centers across the country continues to worry the government and the commuting public.

In fact, a study showed that the Philippine economy lost a staggering P3.5 billion daily in 2017 due to crippling traffic jams in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the study said the loss would balloon to P5.4 billion a day in 2035 without government intervention.

That’s why concerned government authorities would do well to appoint a ” traffic czar” to oversee the traffic situation in the metropolis.

The highly-influential Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) recommended the appointment of a “traffic czar” to address the MM transport crisis.

And what is certainly saddening is the fact that sometimes “ang away-trapiko ay nagreresulta sa barilan o rambolan,” according to a motorist.

We, like other commuters and motorists, share the view of MAP that the transport crisis was the result of a failure in traffic management.

It is, thus, important that there must be a change in road and management policies and practices if we are to succeed in addressing the problem of traffic congestion in the country.

Likewise, people said the government ought to decongest Metropolitan Manila and other urban centers across the Philippines.

Ito ay kung gusto nating mawala ang pagsisikip ng trapiko sa mga lugar na ito.
