AND the new World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia super featherweight champion is Charly Suarez.

Suarez, a three-time Southeast Asian Games champion now making a name in the pro ranks, stopped Tomjune Mangubat in the 12th round of their “Ultimate Knockout Challenge” at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City over the weekend.

The 33-year-old Suarez, who captured three gold medals in the SEA Games, punished Mangubat with a flurry of punches to the head and body enroute to another convincing victory.

Suarez, who turned pro only in 2019, improved his record to 10-0, including seven knockouts.

Mangubat dropped to 15-3-1 with 12 knockouts.

“The Lord has always given me stellar opportunities, accomplishments and avenues in proving not just to the world but to myself that in Christ alone I am able,” said Suarez in a Facebook post.

“I am honored to have shared the ring with a noble fighter in Tomjune Mangubat,” added Suarez, who also thanked his long-time friend-coach Delfin Boholst and Cucuy Elorde of VSP Promotions.

Sharing the limelight was Carl Jammes Martin, who beat Ronnie Baldonado of Cotabato in the 11th round to win the vacant World Boxing Association Asia super bantamweight belt.

Martin, nicknamed “Wonder Boy”, completely dominated the match starting in the eighth round and went for the kill in the 11th round against the hard-fighting but visibly-tired Baldonado.

The end came with 2:02 left in the 11th round after referee Nowel Haduca stopped the fight in favor of the 22-year-old pride of Lagawe, Ifugao.

Aside from capturing the vacant WBA super bantamweight title, Martin also retained his Philippine super bantamweight crown which he won last December.

Overall, Martin extended his winning record to 19 wins, including 16 by knockouts.

Baldonado, on the other hand, suffered suffered back-to-back losses and fell to a 15-3 win-loss record.

Actually, the Luisito Espinosa-trained Baldonado caught Martin with a counter right and sent him reeling for the first knockdown of his career.

But Martin was not to be denied, getting up quickly and gradually taking control of the fight.

Both Suarez and Martin are preparing for major international stints in their next fights.

Suarez is hoping to make a headway in the crowded 130-pound division that includes reigning WBC champion Oscar Valdez of Mexico, who the Filipino champion defeated in the amateurs.

Martin, on the other hand, is looking forward to more lucrative fights abroad after signing a contract with Probellum Promotions recently.
