SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Sunday extended his warmest congratulations and heartfelt gratitude to the athletes who represented the Philippines at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, saying their outstanding performances have made the entire Filipino nation proud.

“The achievements of the Philippine delegation, including securing medals and setting new records, demonstrate the dedication, hard work, and excellence of our athletes. Their success is a testament to the resilience and talent of Filipino sportsmen and sportswomen,” Speaker Romualdez said.

Highlighting the role of sports in fostering unity and national pride, Speaker Romualdez reaffirmed his commitment to supporting and promoting sports development in the country, anticipating even greater successes in the future.

“Sports has the power to unite a nation, and our athletes have certainly united us through their outstanding achievements. I am committed to furthering sports development in the Philippines to nurture future champions,” the leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives stated.

“The 19th Asian Games have once again showcased the country’s potential as a competitive force in international sports. I am confident that this success will inspire future generations of Filipino athletes,” he added.

The Philippines clinched a four-gold medal victory in the 19th Asian Games, thanks to the outstanding performances of pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, jiu-jitsu martial artists Meggie Ochoa and Annie Ramirez, and Gilas Pilipinas, who put an end to the nation’s 61-year title drought in men’s basketball.

The country also secured two silver medals, earned by boxer Eumir Marcial and Wushu sanda fighter Arnel Mandal. There were also 12 bronze medals, with notable achievements from Patrick King Perez in Taekwondo men’s individual poomsa; Jones Llabres Inso in Wushu all-around; Gideon Fred Padua in Wushu men’s 60kg; Clemente Tabugara Jr. in Wushu men’s 65kg; Alexandra Eala in tennis women’s singles; Alexandra Eala and Francis Casey Alcantara in tennis mixed doubles; Patrick Bren Coo in men’s cycling BMX racing; Elreen Ann Ando in weightlifting women’s 64kg; Rheyjey Ortouste, Jason Huerte, Vince Torno, Mark Joseph Gonzales, Ronsited Gabayeron and Jom Lerry Rafael in sepak takraw men’s quadrant; Sakura Alforte in karate women’s individual kata; Jenna Kaila Napolis in jiu-jitsu women’s -52kg; and Rheyjey Ortouste, Jason Huerte, Mark Joseph Gonzales, Ronsited Gabayeron, and Jom Lerry Rafael in sepak takraw men’s regu.

The Philippines has moved up to 16th place overall, marking a modest improvement from its 18th-place finish in the Jakarta Games five years ago, during which the nation also secured four gold medals.

In addition to congratulating the medalists, Speaker Romualdez expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the rest of the Philippine delegation, support team, and the many individuals and organizations that contributed to the success of Filipino athletes.

“This success wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our athletes and the support team behind them. We thank each member of the delegation for their commitment to excellence,” the Speaker said.

He also recognized the crucial role played by the business sector, private organizations, and individuals who provided vital support, including financial assistance and resources, to ensure the delegation’s competitiveness.

“We also express our deepest gratitude to the business sector, private organizations, and individuals who rallied behind our athletes. Your support has been invaluable in helping them achieve their goals,” he said.

The House chief likewise extended his appreciation to the officials of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for their unwavering commitment to Philippine sports.

“Our officials from the POC and PSE have played a pivotal role in guiding our athletes. Their leadership and support have been instrumental in the preparation and participation of our athletes in international competitions,” the Speaker said.
