Family1Family2FAMILY Matters’ was snubbed by the Metro Manila Filmfest Awards last December. A lot of people are wondering why the judges chose to ignore the merits of this heartwarming story of a family where the ailing parents are now in their sunset years. They felt that the situations it portrayed on screen are so achingly true to life.

But now that the awards season for last year’s releases has started, we are no longer surprised that it is now being fully vindicated. It currently continues to win the so many trophies that it truly deserves from the country’s other award giving bodies.

At the 29th LUNA Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines, it won best picture and best actor for octogenarian Noel Trinidad who played the family’s infirm patriarch. Noel has been in the industry for a long time but this is his first time to win an acting award.

It also won best supporting actress for Mylene Dizon as the second daughter whose shop was robbed. And in the technical awards, it won the trophy for best production design.

In the FAMAS Awards, it also won best picture and best actor for Noel Trinidad, but Nikki Valdez won the best supporting actress award as the youngest daughter who has remained a spinster to take care of their aging parents, and in the technical awards, it won the trophy for best editing.

In the Gawad Pasado, given by teachers, it also won best picture and for Nuel Naval, the much deserved best director award.

Nonie Buencamino won best supporting actor as the eldest son and Nikki Valdez won her second best supporting actress award. The best story award was won by Mel Mendoza-del Rosario.

Let us wait and see if “Family Matters” will continue with its winning streak in the months to come when the remaining award giving bodies, like The Eddys (by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors) also hand out their own trophies soon.
