PHILIPPINE National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) director, Major General Albert Ignatius D. Ferro on Wednesday announced the filing of more criminal charges against self-exiled Communist Party of the Philippines chairman Jose Ma. Sison and 45 other CPP/New People’s Army personalities accused of involvement in several atrocities in Bicol region.

The official said that the charges for violation of Republic Act 9851 also known as Philippine Act on Crime Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity were filed against the accused before the Masbate City Prosecutor’s Office.

Apart from Joma Sison, also charged were 45others including Benito Tiamzon alias ‘Ka Celo/ Celo/Iyyo/Ka Lot/Crising Banaag/Jing’ and his wife Wilma Austria Tiamzon alias ‘Ka Wing/Didith/Jana/Pinay/Sering/Ria/Ka Azon/Isabel/Suarez/Edith.’

The Tiamzon couple were suspected CPP/NPA leaders who have been convicted by a Quezon City court for kidnapping and serious illegal detention in November 2020.

Maj. Gen. Ferro said that the charges were filed in connection with the killing of Norberto Buri and Perlito Cortes in Masbate.

He said that suspected NPA gunmen shot to death the 27-year old Buri inside a truck near the boundary of Barangays Cabas-an and Dayhagan in Aroroy municipality. The victim was believed to have been killed by the suspects who mistook him for another former NPA rebel who surrendered to the government.

On the other hand, Cortes was killed in an encounter between a group of NPA members and security troops in Bgy. Eastern Capsay in Baleno municipality.

“The CIDG is mandated by law to serve and protect the country and its citizenry without prejudice or bias. We will remain steadfast in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism,” said Ferro in referring to the charges filed against Joma et al.
