Not very fatal

DOUBTLESS, it is heartening to know that the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the country, where the virus has killed 60,719 people, “are not very fatal.”

Not only that. The virus transmission “is under control” as indicated by the slight increase in the positivity rate in the heavily-populated Metropolitan Manila (MM) area.

In a post on Twitter, pandemic monitor OCTA Research said that MM’s one-week positivity rate just went up from 14.2 percent on July 23 to 15 percent on July 29.

In fact, OCTA Research fellow Guido David said that the rise in COVID-19 cases in impoverished Philippines does not translate to an increase in hospitalization rate.

Some quarters, however, said the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country must cause concern among the authorities and the people, particularly the poor.

“Everybody knows that the government is no longer in a position to meet the needs of the people if there’s a new upsurge in COVID-19 cases,” said a barangay official.

“Saan kukuha ng gagastusin ang gobyerno para tustusan ang mga pangangailangan ng mamamayan eh ubos na ubos ang pera ni Juan dela Cruz?” he asked.

That’s why we call on the people, including the ordinary citizens across the country, to help the government in heading off a possible worsening of the health situation.

With high positivity rates in some parts of the country, including NCR, Calabarzon, Central Luzon and the Visayas, we urge the public to remain vigilant against the virus.

Let’s act now before it’s too late!
