CREATING a dedicated space for women as front desk officers could be a potential solution to the underreporting and under-recording especially of gender-based violence.

Thus said Senators Grace Poe and Senator Risa Hontiveros who both commended this move by the Philippine National Police insisting that this is timely and relevant.

Poe said it is high time that women with capability and talent should be given this kind of role in our society.

“We know women to be more compassionate and more approachable, yet tough and determined. This should not stop the NCRPO, however, from continuously exerting efforts to make the male members of the police force more gender-sensitive. At the end of the day, good cops – female or male – will bolster the faith of people in the justice system and close the gap between communities and the police.” Poe was quoted as saying.

The National Capital Region Police Officer announced recently its plan to remove male police officers from front-desk duty and replace them with their female colleagues.

Based on reports, it was said that female desk officers are more patient and sympathetic. The female desk officer will be called “customer relations officers’.

Senator Hontiveros hailed this move as she explained that time has changed and women were given important roles now in various field with numerous challenges in their hands

“Laging nakakabuti na magdagdag tayo ng kababaihan sa kahit anong organisasyon, lalo na sa ating kapulisan na alam nating male-dominated. Sana nga lang ay hindi i-“type cast” o limitahan ng posisyong “customer relations” ang ating mga babaeng pulis.

According to Hontiveros, women can excel in many roles if given the chance and this move is just a good start to acknowledge that women plays an important role in this world.

“And I still look forward to the first woman PNP chief. I also hope that women already in the police force can help steer the PNP towards a more humane, inclusive, and rights-based standard of conduct. Tulong-tulong tayong mga babae.” Hontiveros said.
