NCRAA: PATTS, St. Dominic triumph

PATTS College of Aeronautics edged erstwhile unbeaten Asian Institute of Maritime Studies, 75-74, while St. Dominic College of Asia stunned defending champion Immaculada Concepcion College, 56-53 in a pair of exciting matches in the 30th NCRAA men’s basketball tournament at the PATTS gymnasium in Parañaque.

Marjun Wahing finished with 21 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes as the Sea Horses of coach Lensy Aransazo handed the Blue Sharks of coach Kiko Flores their first setback in the tournament.

Joshua Bongon and Emman Benitez contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for PATTS, which improved to 3-3 win-loss record.

Jerico Peralta carried the fight for the Blue Sharks with 16 points and six assists in 29 minutes, while Darryll Durante and Karlos Lapira added 13 points each.

Equally exciting was St.Dominic’s victory over ICC.

The Pikemen of coach Bong Dela Cruz relied on Didoy Proel to escape with the win and snap the five-game winning streak of the Blue Hawks of coach Ogie Gumatay.

Proel led the Cavite-based team with 14 points and five rebounds.

Eds Vallena, Edward Clarete, and Edward Daquioag each contributed nine points, helping the team improve to a 4-3 record.

Alfred Flores, the leading scorer for the Blue Hawks, managed only 12 points, six rebounds, and five steals before fouling out.

Jan Famaranco contributed 12 points for ICC which dropped to 6-3.

In other games, Olivarez College rode on the duo of John Umali and Dan Arches to beat Bestlink College of the Philippines, 90-77, and University of Luzon outplayed Lyceum of the Philippines University-Laguna, 82-72.

Umali finished with a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds while Arches added 21 points for the Mike Saguiguit-mentored Sea Lions, who improved to 5-1.

Lian Barbero and Al Dhel Haiber contributed 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Julito Estoya led the losing effort of Bestlink of coach Edwin Punio with 31 points and 11 rebounds.

Datu Borja and Ventax Begenio struck for the BJ Vidal-mentored Golden Tigers, who improved to 2-4.

Borja had 23 points and six rebounds while Begenio contributed 21 points and seven rebounds. Jhomel Sansano chipped in 16 points and eight assists.

Ivan Landicho led the Laguna-based of Pirates of coach Michael Sydiangcowith 17 points, followed by Jeff Gellamucho with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

In the women’s division, Centro Escolar University defeated Bestlink College of the Philippines, 72-50.

Krizzyann Bautista led the balanced scoring attack for coach Romel Gador-mentored CEU with 14 points.

Danica Clarino topscored for Bestlink with 15 points and seven rebounds.
