A 48-YEAR-OLD commissioned officer in Mimaropa region who has a history of heart disease yesterday was recorded as the 88th COVID-19 fatality in the Philippine National Police.

The latest virus victim in the force has the rank of police lieutenant colonel and is assigned in a PNP Intelligence Group Unit stationed in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

Although he already had received his first Sinovac dose last May 23, the victim developed COVID-19 symptoms and was brought to a Calapan City hospital, where he tested positive for the virus, during a conduct of an RT-PCR test last Saturday. The following day, he was pronounced dead by his attending physician.

The official succumbed to acute respiratory distress syndrome and systemic inflammatory response syndrome triggered by the virus.

Another underlying case was his chronic hypertensive cardiovascular disease, the PNP Health Service said.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar condoled with the family of the official and assured them of immediate financial assistance and prompt release of all benefits due him.
