ONE of the most unpredictable Three Year Old Maiden Stakes races for 2023 went underway last Sunday at the Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar Batangas.

With a full gate of fourteen gallopers aiming to get a share of the total purse of P1.2-million with P720,000 going to the victor, the racing fans had a hard time which horse to back with their hard-earned money.

In a day full of longshots, the card was highlighted by millennial horseowner Rafael Abacan’s Save My Savings which pulled the rug from under the rest of the field.

Sent off as the third to the least favored to win the race, only backed by P8,145 out of the P523,474 in the Double sales, the Danilo “Dave” de la Cruz-trained chestnut filly piloted by Oneal P Cortez jumped out of the gate in third and stayed in that position until the last 600 meters where the Tony Tan-bred galloper made his move for the win and at one point stretched his lead to two lengths until Chrome Bell made his carge to challenge.

But at the wire, Save My Savings still had a lot of horse left to hold off Chrome Bell and take the plum by almost two lengths.

Third place went to the pacesetting Borrowed Heaven and fourth to Destin Guest.“Expected talaga namin na mag-uumento pa siya kumpara dun sa itinakbo niya sa trial race kaya medyo inasahan namin yung panalo. At salamat nakaraos din,” trainer Dave de la Cruz said in a post-race interview.

Time of race was 1:25.4 for the 1400-meter journey with early fractions of 12′-22′-24, while the final quarter was a blistering 26′.

“It was indeed a great race that we and the bayang karerista witnessed in the just concluded Maden Stakes. Next week, another exciting race will be in store for the racing fans as we hold the 1st Road to the Triple Crown with seven equally capable thoroughbreds gunning for the win,” said Philracom Chairman Reli de Leon.
