OZAMIZ — Jillianne Jumalon, Sebastian Marbas, Janin Dhrey Querequere and Iyren Kate Moneva shared the limelight by winning their respective age-group categories in the first Misamis Occidental Gov. Henry S. Oaminal 8-in-1 chess tournament held at the Ozamiz City Auditorium.

Jumalon split the point with ACM Joemel Narzabal in the fifth and final round to finish with 4.5 points on four wins and one draw in the 15 years old and under category.

Jumalon wound up in a tie with Narzabal, but clinched the title by virtue of higher tiebreak score.

Three players — Lyn Getubig, Jeshua Lagunay and Jun Jiyrek Sacay — shared third to fifth places with four points.

Getubig humbled Whelmer Ian Esterleona, Lagunay outplayedJomar Anhao and Sacay downed Neil Cyril Austero to complete the top five finishers in this five-round event held as part of the three-day competition organized by theAsenso Misamis Occidental Chess Association.

In the 13-under, Marbas of Cagsyan de Oro settled for a draw with Jaden Cedric Abesamis of Misamis Oriental to capture the title with 5.5 points.

Half a point behind with five points is Ashzley Aya Nicole Paquinol of Cagayan de oro City, who outwitted Quarl Maverick Vera Cruz in the final round.

With 4.5 points are Dave Cris Angelo Virador, Abesamis, Francis Nathaniel Embolode, Aron John Pitos and Ranzeth Marco Magallanes.

In the 11-under category, Querequere edged Cyreine Jean Borce in the tiebreak to bag the championship.

Both Querequere and Borce finished with 5.5 points.

In third to fifth places with five points are Gabriel Kurt Dayrit, Jan Calvin Abesamis, and Miguel Antonio Blanco.

Dayrit defeated Princess Rane Magallanes,Abesamis humbled Cyros Dave Gallana and Blanco overwhelmed Calix Miguel Farre.

In the nine-under division, Moneva completed a five-game sweep to clinch the crown.

Moneva finished a full point ahead of Aidh Naveen Munsing and 1.5 points clear of Aleyah Kristin Francisco, and three other players.

Moneva won over Adler Jarred Pilapil, Gabriel Romarate, Jamilla Mae Comanda, Amiel Jayden Mabugnon and Levon Reyes.

Asenso Misamis Occidental Chess Association president Rey Urbiztono said the age-group tournaments were part of the Gov. Oaminal 8-in-1 Chess Festival held as part of Misamis Occidental’s 94th anniversary.

Most of the age-group participants also took part in the simultaneous exhibition matches conducted by Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre, GMs Rogelio Antonio, Jr. and Darwin Laylo, and IMs Angelo Young, Ronald Bancod, Rolando Nolte, Roderick Nava, Richelieu Salcedo., Joel Pimetnel and Alekhine Nouri.
