Fil-British Bossong shines in ICTSI- National Open
IT was truly a lovely day for Victoria Bossong of FilAm Sports.
Bossong captured her first gold medal in the women’s 800meters with a time of two minutes and 9.56 seconds in the 2024 ICTSI Philippine Athletic Championships at the Philsports Track Oval in Pasig City.
The 21-year-old Bossong bested national team member Bernalyn Bejoy, who finished with 2:12.48 for the silver medal; and Susan Ramadan of Far Eastern University, who timed 2:17.88 for the bronze medal.
“Yeah, I’m very happy to be here. It’s a lovely day here. It’s really cool being able to compete in the Philippines. Great weather here, amazing competition and I’m just really happy to bring pride to our country. t’s definitely an adjustment running twice in a day,” said Bossong, who is currently studying at the Neuroscience at Harvard University.
“I really wanted to come out here and put on a good performance. I’m not quite happy with how I did, but again, like you know, I just wanted to come here, win a gold, make the country proud and I think I did that,” added the Filipino-British champion, who nearly hit the Olympic standard of 1:59.30 after timing a personal-best 2:00.92 in a Florida tilt last March.
“It’s definitely just a glimpse of what I can do. I’ve run like two minutes like flat, so I don’t know what time I ran, but I definitely wasn’t close to that um . You know, it’s all part of the journey.”
Sharing the limelight was Sidney Yap also of FilAm Sports, who shone in men’s hammer throw event.
Yap captured the gold medal with a throw of 59.42 meters, beating Phomjan Piyadanai who secured the silver (51.21)
John Nicholan Pangan of the University of Santo Tomas took the bronze with a throw of 40.01 meters.
Hussein Loraña of the National Team claimed the gold medal in the men’s open 800 meters race, clocking 1:51.32.
Loraña outpaced David Paul Matibag of Mandaluyong City, who secured the silver medal with a time of 1:52.34, and Oyamkerl Espinosa from the University of Santo Tomas, who took home the bronze medal with a time of 1:52.63.
Mariel Abuan of the University of the East clinched the gold medal with a leap of 1.72 meters, followed by Sarah Dequinan of Team Malaybalay City of Bukidnon who secured the silver medal with a jump of 1.65 meters.
Jessa Aviso of Spectrum Runners Team A took home the bronze medal with a leap of 1.50 meters.
Also winnign were Malaysia’s Voon Pei Ling in U20 women’s shot put (11.64m), and University of Baguio’s Shiela Mae Domillies in U20 women’s 800m (2:31.49).
