MANILA – Former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and retired archbishop Angel Lagdameo died on Friday. He was 81.

“Archbishop Angel Lagdameo returned to our Creator just this 8:30 a.m. at the age of 81,“ the Archdiocese of Jaro said in a Facebook post.

“Let us include him in our prayers and Masses,” it added, without saying the cause of the archbishop’s death.

Lagdameo was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lucena on Dec. 19, 1964.

He was appointed as Cebu auxiliary bishop in June 1980.

In January 1986, the archbishop was designated as co-adjutor bishop of Dumaguete and then he became bishop of the diocese in May 1989.

He was named archbishop of Jaro on March 11, 2000.

Lagdameo served as head of CBCP from December 2005 to December 2009. He was also the vice president of the CBCP for two terms.

Pope Francis accepted his resignation at the age of 77 in 2018.  Philippine News Agency
