Enjoying a radio show

Lito CincoBELIEVE me, I have been enjoying co-hosting a radio show at DWBL even if it is only once a month when sports is the topic.

Veteran regular host is Teddy Perena, who also writes a sports column. Name of the show is OKS, Oras ng Kaalaman at Saya, and it has been on the air for 10 years already, and my co-hosted show airs every last Monday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m.

He offered me the slot and my responsibility includes inviting the guests who should be sports personalities, of course because the subject is on sports.

In the past, Teddy was able to invite the likes of Nornan Black, Pido Jarencio, Dylan Ababou, Bennet Palad, and volleyball coach Jerry Yee.

And on my part, I have invited Philippine Sports Commission ( PSC) Commissioner Fritz Gaston who talked on his new job at the PSC and different aspects of basketball.

For one, he shares my belief that the priority sports to support are Olympic sports , martial arts in particular and others that have weight classifications where our chances would be better.

I have known Fritz from way back when he was in college, a member of the back-to back NCAA champion in the mid 70s , to his being a national cager, and being a professional basketball player after, all the way to his corporate management career in Indonesia and here, then back to sports as a coach and official. But still, when we guested him, I still learbed some unknown trivia about the guy.

We also had Gintong Alay founder now Laoag City Mayor Mike Keon whose insights on sports I respect very much, and he reiterated his stand that we do not need Fil-Ams, or Fil-foreigners as sports officials have gone beyond America to recruit talents for the national teams.

Mike feels we have enough local talents but they need to be developed and given the proper training, and this guy knows what he is talking about.

Premiere Volleyball League (PVL) head honcho Ricky Palou has also guested with us one afternoon and he shared his thoughts on Philippine volleyball and how the PVL started and grew.

Actually he gets the credit for pushing women’s volleyball to his group, Sports Vision Management Group then headed by the late Jun Bernardino, and the right timing they had with a La Salle- Ateneo finals that attracted a huge crowd and on television at that.

Of course he could not say the same for men’s volleyball as it has not reached the level of fan popularity that the women’s side has achieved, something he vowed to work on.

Women’s basketball coach Patrick Aquino was an early guest and he is one coach I like and respect, he has stayed with his program on the women’s side of basketball for a long time already.

He shared how he has built relationships in America that allows him to have a steady turn over of talents for the national squad enabling to come up with impressive performances abroad.

Swimming Olympian Ral Rosario was supposed to be on , but we had a miscommunication and we had to reset.

Last Monday, former sportswriter and now book author Noel Albano dropped by and for the first time, I was live at the studio that afternoon to make sure there will be no technical problems on my side, which has been the case.

Noel, who was with Times Journal in the late 70s, I was ahead of him by a couple of years, just had his book When We Were Champions published with the help of another ex-sportswriter now a politician Ray Roquero.

Both Noel and I were early so we had some time to exchange thoughts with Teddy off the air, actually, we were supposed to go live from 4 to 5 p.m., then taped on line with old players.

Unfortunately Olympian Ed Roque had to beg off because of colds .

So on November 27, we will instead go live with him and hopefully be able to invite the likes of Manny Paner, Jimmy Mariano, Yoyong Martirez, or the kids of even older players to share their stories about their fathers.

I am supposed to ask PSC Chairnan Dickie Bachmann to share some stories on his father, the great Olympian who is one of the featured player in Noel’s book.

I thought of inviting ,Chito or Joey Loyzaga , sons of the even greater Carlos Loyzaga, but I remembered Joey telling me recently when he went here that his father did not share with him and Chito on his basketball career, truth is both sons did not get a chance to see Caloy play.

Noel shared his story on the big freeze by Herr Silva and his boys in a game against China I think, there was no 30 second rule yet and players can just pass the ball to one another accounting for low scores then.

After this, the rule was changed and the game picked up the oace, in fact from 30 seconds, it is now a 24 second rule that I was kidding Noel and Teddy that this must be our greatest contribution to the game of basketball.

And I am happy indeed that now in the twilight of my life and sports writing career, I had the opportunity to experience appearing in a radio show, oh yes, now, fans can see radio show hosts in person using on line apps.

An added bonus is the inter action between us and other people in sports we invite.

Please tune in to us, it is only once a month for one hour, and there are 24 hours in a day, 30 to 31 days in a month, do the math, that is very little time that you can devote to OKS.

Thank you Teddy for the experience.
