DFA reiterates commitment to One China Policy
THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reiterated its commitment to One China Policy following the conclusion of the general elections in Taiwan.
In a statement, the DFA said “the DFA reaffirms the principles contained in the Joint Communique of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Government of the People’s Republic of China signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos and Premier Zhou Enlai on 9 June 1975.”
“The Philippines is committed to its One-China Policy,” the statement added.
In the Joint Communique, “the two Governments agree to settle all disputes by peaceful means… without resorting to the use or threat of force.”
Taiwan’s vice president, William Lai Ching-te, won the elections replacing outgoing Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, who ruled the self-governed island since 2016.
Lai won in a three-way race against Hou Yu-ih of the opposition Kuomintang, and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party.
