PARIS (AFP) – Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:

– US jabs for kids –

Pfizer says it has formally requested emergency use authorisation in the United States for its Covid-19 vaccine in children aged five-11.

– India reopens to tourists –

India will re-open for tourists from October 15 after being closed for more than a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the government says.

– Finland restricts Moderna –

Finnish health authorities say they will follow Nordic neighbours Sweden, Norway and Denmark and stop giving Moderna’s Covid-19 jab to men under 30, over fears of heart inflammation side effects.

– Moderna Africa plant –

Moderna announces it will build a plant in vaccine-hungry Africa, with the goal of producing up to 500 million doses of vaccines each year.

– Burundi vaccines at last –

Burundi, one of the last three countries in the world to start inoculating its population against Covid-19, says it expects to receive vaccines between October 25 and the first half of November.

– Ukraine teachers –

Ukraine orders mandatory Covid-19 jabs for teachers and some government officials as the country faces growing infection rates and a sluggish vaccination drive.

– Downbeat Mideast outlook –

The World Bank projects 2.8 percent growth for the Middle East and North Africa region’s economy in 2021, with total losses from the pandemic estimated to reach almost $200 billion by the end of this year.

– BA, Ryanair let off –

Britain rules that British Airways and Irish carrier Ryanair are not obliged to refund customers whose flights were cancelled because of the pandemic.

– More than 4.8 million dead –

The coronavirus has killed at least 4,822,267 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP compilation of official data.

The US is the worst-affected country with 707,788 deaths, followed by Brazil with 599,359, India with 449,856, Mexico 280,607 and Russia with 213,549.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the US with 2,591 new deaths, followed by Russia with 924 and Mexico with 711.
