Cavite, San Juan show way

CAVITE Spartans flexed their muscle anew to roll back Quezon City Simba’s Tribe, 15-6, and Cagayan Kings, 17-4, and assume the lead in the Northern Division in the 2024 PCAP All-Filipino Conference chess team championships last Wednesday.

Michael Concio, Daniel Quizon, Marie Antoinette San Diego, GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. and Roel Abelgas provided the victories for the Spartans, who posted their seventh win in eight matches in the prestigious 18-team, two-division competition sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land and PCWorx.

Concio swept Michaela Concio, 3-0; Quizon dumped Norman Madariaga, 3-0; San Diego nipped Michella Concio, 1-0; Antonio edged Danilo Ponay, 2-1; and Abelgas whitewashed Jaime Criste, 3-0, for Cavite’s victory over Quezon City.

Quizon routed Tyrone de los Santos, 3-0, and Antonio bested Jude Ulanday, 2-1, to lead Cavite over Cagayan.

Sharing the limelight with Cavite is San Juan, 17.5-3.5 winner over Cagayan and 15-6 victor over Rizal Towers.

The back-to-back victories by the Predators of PCAP Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and coaoch Hubert Estrella enabled them to match the Spartan’s 7-1 win-loss record.

Cavite, however, leads San Juan,126.5 to 112, in match points.

Defending champion Pasig Pirates also recorded easy victories over Rizal Towers, 17.5-3.5, and Olongapo Rainbow, 14.5-6.5 for a third-best 6-2 record.

..Tied with Pasig for third place is Manila, which defeated Isabela Knights, 14.5-6.5.

PCAP, the country’s first and only professional chess league, is headed by President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Atty. Richard Clarin.

Games are being played every Wednesday and Saturday.
