Burglar who looted OFW’s house killed in shootout

CABANATUAN CITY — At least P275,000 in cash, jewelry and other luxury items were stolen by the house of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) here Monday noon.

Robbed was Jose Miguel, 43, OFW, of Samson Subd., Bgy. Sumacab Este, this city.

Miguel immediately sought police help after learning of the robbery at 4:50 p.m. The suspects climbed over the fence and destroyed the grill of the sliding glass window at the left side of the house to gain entry.

Ransacked was the victim’s bedroom where some P60,000 in cash was carted away by the suspects, including several pieces of jewelry worth P200,000 and his Michael Kors shoulder bag worth P15,000.

A victim’s neighbor told authorities that one of the suspects looked familiar and identified him as one Darwin Basan, of Bgy. Aduas Norte, this city.

City police head Lt. Col. Barnard Danie Dasugo said he ordered his men to conduct follow-up operations against the suspects.

At about 11 p.m., Dasugo said his men led by Major Angelito Manalastas spotted Basan and his cohort on board separate motorcycles along St. Joseph Street in Bgy. Zulueta. Lawmen ordered the duo to stop but the suspects fired at the operatives, triggering a gunfight which left Basan dead. His unidentified cohort eluded arrest.

Recovered at the encounter scene were a .45 caliber pistol, black Microbike EXT motorcycle with a utility box inside it, a fired bullet from a .45 caliber and three spent shells for a cal. 9mm.

Dragnet operations are being conducted for the possible arrest of the other suspect.
