THE Department of Justice (DOJ) ordered the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to investigate the potential privileges, such as unauthorized furloughs, that may be enjoyed by individuals deprived of liberty (PDLs) while incarcerated in Bilibid and other correctional facilities.

The order came after the apprehension of inmate Jad Dera, one of the co-accused of former senator Leila de Lima, along with six security officers.

They were caught attempting to re-enter the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Detention Center in Manila after an unauthorized furlough.

“We will extend this investigation to the BuCor to ensure that similar incidents do not occur there because we have witnessed the dynamics here at the NBI, which could possibly be happening at BuCor as well,” said Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Atty. Mico Clavano.

Dera, along with six other NBI security officers, were arrested and subsequently charged for an unauthorized furlough.
