BBM’s top priority

KNOWING full well the many problems confronting the country’s farmers, fishermen and other farm workers, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has decided to take on the portfolio of secretary of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

As the agriculture secretary, the incoming Chief Executive from Ilocos Norte is seen to increase food production as part of his program to achieve food security.

In the view of various quarters, notably the nation’s farmers and fishers, Marcos’ taking over the reins of the DA is ample proof that he is sensitive to public opinion.

“Alam ni Pangulong Marcos na masama na ang loob ng mga nagtatrabaho sa bukid dahil halos wala na silang maipakain sa kani-kanilang pamilya,” said a former farmer.

“Sobra-sobra na ang taas ng presyo ng mga gamit sa bukid, partikular na ang abono, pero pababa naman ng pababa ang presyo ng kanilang mga ani,” he lamented.

At the same time, the only son and namesake of the late President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos noted that there are underutilized offices of the agriculture department.

The highly-articulate ex-senator said these offices must be retooled postpandemic, adding “we’re going back to basics…and we will rebuild the value chain of agriculture.”

By assuming the top DA post, which is now held by Secretary William Dar, Mr. Marcos has given his incoming administration a much-needed boost in the eyes of the farmers.

Without doubt, it takes a large dose of political will to be able to say no to influential and powerful personalities seeking juicy positions in the government service.

Kagaya ng Bureau of Customs, na nasa ilalim ng Department of Finance, talagang maraming naglalaway sa puwestong hawak ngayon ni Secretary Dar, na isa ring Ilocano.

Keep on punching, BBM!
