UST, NU take lead in UAAP chess

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas leads the men’s division, while National University pulls away in the women’s side after four rounds of the UAAP chess tournament over the weekend at Far Eastern University campus.

The Growling Tigers turned to Melito Ocsan and Lee Roi Palma in nipping Adamson, 2.5-1.5, in the fourth round right after Julius Gonzales powered the España-based woodpushers to a 4-0 romp of Ateneo in the third round.

UST now has 13 points, three off titleholder FEU, which has 10 points in second place following identical 3-1 wins over Adamson and University of the Philippines.

Bannered by WFM Allaney Jia Doroy, the Lady Bulldogs bested La Salle, 3-1, in the fourth round, and blanked Adamson, 4-0, in the third round.

With 14 points, NU opened a seven-point lead over second-running UP, which logged similar 2.5-1.5 victories over UST and FEU.

La Salle is running third in the men’s division with nine points after battling to a 2-2 draw with UP in the third round and a 4-0 rout of Ateneo in the fourth.

Reigning women’s champion FEU and La Salle are locked in a tie with third place at 6.5 points.

As the Lady Tamaraws dropped their ties to the Lady Falcons, 1-3, and the Fighting Maroons, the Lady Archers were able to offset their fourth round loss to the Lady Bulldogs with a 2.5-1.5 win over the Blue Eagles.

Action resumes tomorrow with fifth round at 9 a.m. and the sixth round at 2 p.m.
