UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas solidified its bid for a spot in the next round after a 25-13, 25-19, 25-15 drubbing of Emilio Aguinaldo College in the Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

The Tigresses showcased their scoring prowess as they relentlessly pounded the Lady Generals with missiles for the quick win that kept their tight grip of the top spot in Pool B with a 3-0 win-loss record.

“I’m happy the team executed well in this game. I just want to see more consistency in our second unit as we head into the next round,” UST coach Kungfu Reyes said.

The Espana-based squad needed only an hour and 17 minutes to keep EAC winless in three games.

Angeli Abella had 19 points to lead the Tigresses while Bianca Plaza and Xyza Gula added eight and seven points, respectively.

Jeanne Porto and Catherine Almazan led the Lady Generals with nine points each.

In the second game, Adamson University kept its hopes of advancing into the next round alive with a masterful 25-15, 25-22, 25-16, win over erstwhile unbeaten Lyceum of the Philippines University in Pool B.

The Lady Falcons zapped the energy out of the Lady Pirates in the second set as Adamson unleashed a 10-2 blitz to erase a 15-21 deficit for the reversal.

It was all Lady Falcons in the third set.

Adamson tied LPU with a 2-1 win-loss slate at second spot behind undefeated University of Sto. Tomas (3-0).

The Lady Pirates and Tigresses will duke out a seat in the next round on Saturday while the Lady Falcons will take on winless Emilio Aguinaldo College next week.

Meanwhile, reigning UAAP champion National University and Ateneo de Manila University clinched seats into the next round after sweeping their respective Pool B assignments on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs’ firepower proved too much for Arellano University as NU cruised to a 25-9, 25-17, 25-14, victory while the Blue Eagles made quick work of Jose Rizal University, 25-20, 25-16, 25-10, to hike their perfect records to 2-0.

Rookie Vangie Alinsug registered 12 points despite playing only in the last two frames to lead NU while Myrle Escanlar scored seven of her nine points in the third set.

Lyann De Guzman, on the other hand, had a 15-point explosion for Ateneo, which also got 13 markers from Yvana Sulit, 11 from Briana Ng and 10 from veteran winger Vanie Gandler.

The Lady Chiefs closed its campaign with a 1-2 slate while the Lady Bombers finished the group stage winless in three tries.
