Tragedy in Katipunan, splendor in Batasan

Mario FetalinoPRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered Monday a very splendid message in his recent State of the Nation Address during the joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate in Batasan, Quezon City.

Marcos looked very confident and sounded very positive. More importantly, he delivered good news. No bad news at all.

As one puts it, PBBM’s speech summarizes his plans for the country in the next six years. He focused on the recovery of our economy which is what Filipinos actually need at this time.

I took note of his priorities topped by infrastructure development. Full speed ahead – his marching order to the Department of Transportation — is so inspiring.

This corner has been advocating for the implementation of key projects to advance the Philippine’s transport system. Marcos vowed for more trains and highways. In doing these projects, Marcos wants the help of the private sector.

The future is promising. Congrats BBM for bringing hope for the nation!

What could drive a man to kill three people at the same time?

Many were shocked when news broke out about a doctor who shot and killed a former mayor, her assistant and a security guard of a university in Katipunan, Quezon City.

In an FB post, my colleague Jonathan Mayuga from the Business Mirror wrote, “ambushed three times, clinic was shut down, charged with 70 counts of cyber libel.”

“Nobody listened to him when he was telling the whole world the ex-Basilan mayor was involved in illegal drugs,” the post said.

“You pushed the man too hard against the wall. You gave him no choice,” it added.

No names were mentioned though in that post.

The suspect in the deadly shooting incident is in police custody. With him alive, the public could know more about what led to the gruesome killing.

At any rate, I sympathize with the families of the victims of the tragic incident. Violence should never have a place in our society.

Also demonstrating support for the families of those who died and were injured in the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University are members of an organization advocating against malpractices in government.

Aio Bautista, lead convenor of the Filipino League of Advocates for Good Governance-Maharlika (FLAG-Maharlika), said they were also sad to learn that the suspected shooter was Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumul.

Yumul, Bautista said, is a known humanitarian doctor in his community and a whistle-blower in the drug trade in his hometown.

According to the FLAG Maharlika executive, Yumul approached their organization to help expose the alleged drug trade and corruption in Lamitan City.

“Our organization assisted in providing free legal advice in his filing of charges against certain government officials for alleged corrupt practices,” Bautista said.

“We strongly denounce the use of extra-judicial actions and violence. As FLAG-Maharlika advocates against malpractices in government, we also champion peace and abhor the use of violence in the pursuit for a better Philippines,” he said.

“This is why we strongly call for judicial reforms so that justice may be served swiftly,” Bautista added.
