President Marcos’ visions

PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. delivered yesterday his first State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) before the joint session of Congress, articulating on his visions.

And the Filipino people, majority of them poverty-stricken farmers, fishermen and other agricultural workers, expect these visions to slowly take shape despite many challenges.

The public applauded him when he boomed during his SONA, held at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City, that his administration would resuscitate the devastated economy.

President Marcos also vowed to uplift the lives of farmers, debt-strapped agrarian reform beneficiaries, overseas Filipino workers, and other unfortunate members of society.

At the same time, the new Chief Executive reiterated his determination to pursue an independent foreign policy, where the Philippines “is a friend to all and an enemy to none.”

Marcos presented his administration’s proposed legislative measures, including the national government rightsizing program, budget modernization bill, and e-government act.

Thus, leaders of the two-chamber Congress – the 24-member Senate and the House of Representatives – would do well to fast-track the approval of Marcos’ 19 legislative measures.

Quickly, Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, a Mindanaoan, and House Speaker Martin G. Romualdez, a Visayan and a cousin of Marcos, pledged to support the measures.

The people, including the ordinary citizens, expect our senators and congressmen, district and sectoral, to hasten the passage of the Marcos-proposed legislative agenda.

This, if we want to nurse back to health the ailing economy, which was ravaged by the crippling COVID-19 pandemic, and achieve the government’s socio-economic goals.
