THE BIG QUESTION

HOW wealthy is Apollo Quiboloy?

This question emerged when Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed amazement at how the leader of the religious sect Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) manages global operations and an alleged extravagant lifestyle.

Hontiveros said the Senate will scrutinize Quiboloy’s wealth as part of the investigation into allegations of human trafficking, rape, and sexual and physical abuse within KOJC.

On January 23, the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality, headed by Hontiveros, initiated an investigation. Two Ukrainian women, formerly affiliated with KOJC, provided accounts of alleged sexual abuse, implicating Quiboloy himself.

Under the aliases Nina and Sofia, they shared their alleged experiences after traveling from Ukraine to Davao City to take on the roles of “pastorals” or special assistants to the KOJC leader.

Hontiveros previously noted that “pastorals” form a group of women in prominent positions within KOJC. These women are allegedly assigned personal tasks and errands for Quiboloy, including laundering his clothes, bathing him, cleaning his bedroom, and offering massages.

Reports indicate that KOJC has expanded its presence to over 200 countries globally, including Japan, Cambodia, Portugal, Egypt, Africa, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, the United States, France, Ukraine, Argentina, Brazil, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and several others.

“There is a testimony of a former preacher who revealed other crimes of Apollo Quiboloy relating to his hidden wealth and businesses,” Hontiveros alleged.

Hontiveros also suggested that the alleged crimes extend beyond local boundaries, indicating that instances of wrongdoing attributed to Quiboloy have occurred in other parts of the world.

“These patterns and practices are persisting as we speak, and sustaining his other criminal activities,” Hontiveros said.

She added: “Hindi lang po sa Pilipinas ang mga krimen na ito, kundi sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng mundo. The international breadth of Apollo Quiboloy’s criminal activities is truly astounding.”

Quiboloy’s camp deemed the Senate probe politically motivated, with his lawyer, Ferdinand Topacio, criticizing Hontiveros for alleged trial by publicity.

Topacio urged Hontiveros to file criminal complaints instead, arguing that the Senate is an inappropriate venue for these investigations.
