THE Senate and the House of Representatives have ratified the reconciled version of bills that reflect concern over the use of “modern technology” in criminal activities.

The proposed legislation – SIM Card Registration Act – calls for the mandatory registration of SIM cards as a prerequisite to their sale and activation in the country.

A subscribers identity module (SIM) card is an integrated circuit chip on cellular telephones used to identify and authenticate subscribers.

Sen. Grace Poe, chair of the Senate committee on public services, said the proposed law mandates all public telecommunication firms to require the registration of all SIM cards.

If approved by President Duterte, whose presidency ends on June 30, 2022, the measure is seen to end the “troll era” that has caused division among the Filipino people.

It is public knowledge that unscrupulous individuals use the many wonders of modern technology, such as cellular telephones, to victimize people and commit other crimes.

We share the view of Senator Poe that the proposed legislation would eradicate cellular phone, internet or electronic communication-aided criminal activities.

The two chambers of Congress on Wednesday. ratified the bicameral conference committee report on the Senate and House versions of the so-called “anti-troll” measure.

It is no surprise, therefore, that the people paid a glowing tribute to the our senators and congressmen for prioritizing the approval of the proposed “SIM Card Registration Act.”

It’s a move in the right direction considering the mushrooming number of cyber crimes being committed by people across the country, according to law enforcement authorities.
