San Miguel, TNT in semis

SAN Miguel Beer and TNT Tropang Giga fashioned out similar easy victories over their respective quarterfinal opponents in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

San Miguel slammed the door on Blackwater Bossing, 123-93, while TNT finished off Converge FiberX, 116-95, to advance to the semis.

Marcio Lassiter and CJ Perez finished with 18 points apiece as the Beermen made short work of the Bossing in their No.1 versus No. 8 quarterfinal duel.

Jericho Cruz added 17 points 12 of them in the first half; Mo Tautuaa and Vic Manuel contributed 12 points each and June Mar Fajardo and Simon Enciso had 11 each in a balanced display of firepower.

“Our target at the start of the tourney was the Top 2. In the quarters, we don’t want a second game because we want time yo prepare for the semis,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.

Up next for San Miguel in the semis is the winner between Meralco and Barangay Ginebra.

The Bolts lead the best-of-three series, 1-0.

Five players, led by Mikey Williams and Troy Rosario, scored in double figures for the Tropang Giga, who led by as many as 33 points enroute to a lopsided victory over the FiberXers.

Williams, who leads the league in scoring with an average of 21.7 points a game, finished with 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting in less than 30 minutes of action.

The 30-year-old sophomore guard also went 4-of-7 from the three-point zone to power TNT to a semifinals appearance against either Magnolia Chicken Timplados or NLEX.

Rosario added 18 points and seven rebounds, followed by Roger Pogoy with 16 points, Jayson Castro with15 points and Kelly Williams with10.

Tyrus Hills carried the fight for Converge wirh 18 markers.

Michael Digregorio added 14 points, Abu Tratter had a double double of 10 points and 11 rebounds and Maverick Ahanmisi had 10 points and eight boards.

Meanwhile, Mark Barroca of Magnolia was voted as the Cignal Play-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period July 20-24.

Barroca, the 36-year-old former Far Eastern University standout, finished with averages of 13.3 points ,4.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 steals in three games.

The Zamboanga City native also became the 94th player in PBA history to join the elite 5,000-Point Club. He also became only the eighth player in Magnolia franchise history to mark the milestone.
