A BULACAN lawmaker has filed a bill seeking to repeal the country’s obsolete National Building Code.

Rep. Salvador Pleyto Sr. expressed hope that his House Bill (HB) No. 1180 or the New Philippine Building Act” will be approved to ensure the structural integrity of buildings nationwide.

“This law (Presidential Decree 1096) has to be repealed. We have been using this obsolete law,” Pleyto, a civil engineer, said.

Pleyto said his proposal would make edifices more durable, especially in the country which is hit by numerous disasters.

“We have to make our buildings withstand a magnitude eight earthquake,” Pleyto said.

He said buildings should be “resilient against earthquakes, fire, flood, landslide, storm, volcano and multiple hazards.”
