PH’s vaccination program

THE government, through the Department of Health, has intensified its national vaccination program against the deadly and highly-infectious coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The multi-pronged vaccination program seeks to inocculate 70 percent of the eligible adult population or 72,139,058 Filipinos out of the country’s total population of 110,198,654.

This is to achieve the elusive “herd immunity” or “community protection,” which is very critical in government efforts to revive the COVID-19-battered Philippine economy.

“Community protection” occurs when a large portion of a community becomes immune to a disease, like COVID-19, making its spread from person to person unlikely.

“Hanggang sa ngayon nga eh meron pa tayong mga kababayan, lalo na sa kanayunan, na ayaw magpabakuna dahil sa mga lumalabas na fake news,” lamented a health worker.

And admittedly achieving “herd immunity,” through vaccination, might be difficult due to a number of reasons, including vaccine hesitancy and uneven vaccine roll-out.

A total of 35,838,964 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered nationwide as of September 5, according to the powerful National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19.

Records show that a total of 15,033,354 have already completed two doses, while 20,805,610 have the initial dose.

But with enough supplies of COVID-19 vaccines plus the all-out support of various sectors of society, the Philippines is seen to achieve the elusive “community protection.”

Even ordinary citizens should give all the help the government needs to be able to win the fight against the pandemic, which continues to terrorize people across the globe.
