THE nationwide “go out and register as a voter” campaign of the newly-revitalized Commission on Elections (Comelec) “is a success.”

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia, an election lawyer, said there are now more than a million registration applicants.

The voter registration period for the May 12, 2025 national and local elections started last February 12 and ends on September 30.

The filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for next year’s computerized political exercise is October.

Records show that as of March 6, a total of 1,027.572 applications were processed nationwide in Comelec offices, satellite centers and “Register Anywhere Program” (RAP) stations.

During the seven-month registration period (February 12-September 30), the poll body hopes to register three million new voters.

We commend the Comelec, a constitutional body, for its efforts to register all qualified voters across the country.

In the Philippines, not all the 110 million people exercise the right of suffrage. Only registered voters enjoy this constitutional privilege.

Thus, there’s that need to register as a voter if we want to take part in choosing our leaders who will chart the destiny of the country and people.
