Japan, South Sudan book Paris Olympics tickets

JAPAN is in.

South Sudan is in.

Despite getting the boot, Australia is in.

And being the host country, France is also in.

Four of 12 seats in next year’s Paris Olympics have already been filled up, with four more berths from the Americas and Europe left to be disputed in the FIBA World Cup 2023.

Then four more seats will be up for grabs in the FIBA Olympics Qualifying Tournament to be organized by FIBA early next year.

Japan, which is co-hosting the FIBA World Cup 2023 with the Philippines and Indonesia, claimed the lone Asian ticket, while South Sudan took the lone berth from Africa.

In Okinawa, Joshua Hawkinson finished with 29 points and Keisei Tominaga added 22 points as Japan defeated Cape Verde, 80-71.

With its third win in five matches, Japan became the highest-ranked Asian team in the 32-team competition. and earned a direct ticket to next year’s Paris Olympics.

Japan also won over Finland in the group stage and Venezuela in the classification round.

Japan’s victory over Cape Verde also eliminated Lebanon, which defeated Iran, 81-73, to finish second-best Asian team with 2-3 record.

Co-host Philippines and China wound up with 1-4 slates.

Jordan and Iran both went 0-5.

Meanwhile, South Sudan also booked its ticket to Paris earlier in the day as the World Cup’s highest-placed African team.

Led by Carlik Jones of the Chicago Bulls, South Sudan outsteadied Angola, 101-78, to pick up its third win.

Egypt, South Sudan’s closest challenger, lost 86-88 to New Zealand and dropped to 2-3.

Angola and Ivory Coast finsihed 1-4.

Australia, which failed to get past the first round, grabbed the Oceania berth ahead of lone rival New Zealand.

France qualified automatically as hosts. Four further spots at the 12-team Olympic competition will be up for grabs at next year’s qualifying tournament by FIBA.
