THE Carmelite Monastery and Convent in La Paz, Iloilo City was placed on a lockdown after 24 nuns and nine staff members tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus disease-19.

The lockdown started to take effect last Sunday.

Jeck Conlu, spokesman of the city COVID team, said the patients are being closely monitored since most of them are elderly.

Conlu said 45 residents of the monastery were tested on Saturday morning after they were exposed to a fellow nun who showed COVID symptoms.

“The index case manifested an influenza-like illness. There are also five others who have symptoms,” Conlu said.

The results of the tests were released on Saturday, showing 33 tested positive for the deadly virus.

The eldest among the cases is a 93-year-old nun while the youngest is a 17-year-old female staff member.

Conlu said those who tested positive are under isolation in the monastery.

He said they are also closely monitoring those whom the 33 had got in close contact with.

As of July 24, the City Health Office said Iloilo City has 102 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
