Gov’t’s caring response

THE top leadership of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has declared that government compassion should be felt by the people it serves.

New DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian made the statement during his visit to the agency’s 13 centers and residential care facilities in the Metropolitan Manila (MM) area.

Through these centers and residential care facilities across the country, the DSWD takes care of abandoned, neglected and/or abused children, women and the elderly.

Last Wednesday, February 8, Gatchalian visited the Reception and Study Center for children, Golden Reception and Action Center for the Elderly and Other Special Cases.

The DSWD secretary also inspected the National Vocational Rehabilitation Center, Rehabilitation and Sheltered Workshop, Bahay Silungan, and Jose Fabella Center.

We share the view of the former long-time mayor of Valenzuela City that “we need to make sure that they (those housed in DSWD facilities) will feel our compassion.”

And what is important, the solon-turned-Cabinet member said, is that these DSWD-operated centers and residential care facilities should be “livable and comfortable.”

That’s the reason why Gatchalian, a former congressman, wants these facilities to be in good condition and have adequate personnel to properly respond to their needs.

Aside from caring for these children, women and senior citizens, the DSWD likewise grants financial assistance to other unfortunate nenvers of Philippine society.

We are all for this because this impoverished Southeast Asian nation is teeming with abandoned, neglected and/or abused children, women and elderly.
