THE good news is that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) which has claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe, is reportedly heading towards the “endemic phase” in the country.

This after one of the country’s health experts noted the continued decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in various parts of this impoverished Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 million people.

“Yung nakikita naman talaga natin dito sa COVID-19, mukhang nagiging endemic na siya in the sense na magci-circulate na ‘yan (na) parang sipon,” said Dr. Edsel Salvana.

Dr. Salvana is a member of the Department of Health (DOH) Technical Advisory Group.

DOH Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Maria Rosario Vergeire had earlier said that COVID-29 cases in Luzon continued to decline while cases in Mindanao were plateauing

Salvana described the fluctuating trend in the number of COVID-19 cases as a sign of endemicity.

A pandemis begins to shift to an endemic once the disease becomes more stable and manageable.

And why should the Filipino people, particularly the jobless and the poorest of the poor who find it hard to eat three times a day due to the rising prices of food and other basic necessities, rejoice?

“Kasi kontroladona ng ating mga doktor ang nakakatakot na sakit na ito na nagpahirap sa buong mundo, kasama na ang Pilipinas,” a COVID-19 survivor said.

Despite this, Dr. Salvana called on the Filipino people to still remain vigilant against the disease and reiterated the importance of vaccination and wearing of mask.

But he reminded the public that although the disease, which originated from China, “is really becoming endemic and parang regular illnesses na rin siya, nakamamatay pa ito.”
