THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered the intensification of the drive against the illegal use of sirens, blinkers, bells and other emergency devices in vehicles.

Many quarters lauded the PNP leadership for issuing the oder following complaints of their unauthorized use by private motor vehicles in various parts of the country.

PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao has already instructed the elite PNP-Highway Patrol Group (HPG) to intensify the crackdown against erring motorists.

Under Presidential Decree (PD) No. 96, private vehicles are not authorized to use sirens and other gadgets and devices that emit exceptionally loud and startling sounds.

They may be attached to and use only on motor vehicles designated for official use by the military, NBI, LTO, police and fire departments, and hospital ambulances.

We share the view of many that the unregulated use of these emergency gadgets and devices impedes and confuses traffic, particularly during the so-called rush hours.

The unauthorized use of sirens, bells, blinkers, horns, whistles and other emergency gadgets constitutes a major problem in the maintenance of peace and order.

Maj. Gen. Valeriano T. De Leon, PNP Director for Operations, also warned sellers and auto shop owners against installing sirens and blinkers in private motor vehicles.

Certainly, it takes a large dose of political will to go after motorists who insist on illegally using these emergency gadgets and devices “para labagin ang mga batas trapiko.”

Let’s go after these hard-headed motorists!
