WORLD Chess Olympiad coach IM Idel Datu will give chess lectures for students of the E. Rodriguez, Jr. High School on Monday, May 22.

Datu, who served as program head for chess of Ateneo de Manila from 1996 to 2015, will share his knowledge to aspiring chess players starting 11 a.m.

Datu, a mainstay of newly-crowned PCAP champion Pasig Pirates of Mayor Vico Sotto, earned his IM title in 2001.

The chess lecture by Datu is part of the “Isulong Mo with GM Eugene Torre and IM Angelo Young’s” simultaneous chess exhibitions against select ERJHS students and alumni.

“We’re very happy that IM Datu agreed to be a part of our Torre-Young simultaneous exhibition matches by providing free chess lectures to our student-participants,” said ASC president Ed Andaya of Batch 81.

“Datu’s long experience as a player-coach will surely help ERJHS students in polishing their games,” added tournament director Roy Madayag of Batch 91.

More than 50 high school students have signed up to join the activity. They will play in a five-round Swiss system tournament to determine the top 20 players who will be given the chance to play Torre and Young.

Supporting the one-day event are former ERJHS Alumni Association president Jess Asistin, Lina Torres of Batch 62, Engr. Gene and Ruby Bollido of Batch 70, Rey Bartolo of Batch 81, Lizette Mariano of Batch 93 and Camp Pulong Gubat Wavepool Resort-Batangas.
