BIÑAN, Laguna — South Cotabato, Batangas and Quezon City hurdled their respective opponents on another action-packed day in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Season 6 at the Alonte Sports Arena here Wednesday.

Led by Val Acuña and Kyle Tolentino, South Cotabato demolished Imus, 106-65, to register one of the biggest winning margins in the annual league organized by Sen. Manny Pacquiao.

Acuña fired a game-high 21 points, including three triples, while Tolentino contributed 18 points, including four triples, for the Warriors of veteran coach Elvis Tolentino.

Jervy Cruz added 15 points, spiked by three triples and four assists, Mark Cruz tallied 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Felix Apreku grabbed 10 rebounds in the Warriors’ impressive wire-to-wire victory.

Overall, South Cotabato converted 16-of-39 attempts from the three-point area for a high 41 percent compared to only 1-of-13 or 7.7 percent of Imus.

Imus got 24 points from Luis Tapenio and 15 points from John Rey Sumido.

In other matches, Batangas outsteadied Bulacan, 76-68, while Quezon City rallied past Muntinlupa, 81-74, to join the early leaders in the two-division, 30-team league.

Levi Hernandez, Cedric Ablaza and Dawn Ochea joined forces as Batangas couldn’t break away and had to thwart Bulacan’s repeated assaults.

Hernandez finished with 19 points, including five in the fourth quarter to lead the charge of the Tanduay Rhum-sponsored Batangas.

Ablaza poured 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Ochea wound up with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Rhum Masters.

Veteran Paolo Hubalde carried the fight for Bulacan with 18 points, including seven in the fourth, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Only John Carandang, however, provided offensive support with 10 points plus rebounds.

Quezon City banked on Rhinwill Yambing and homegrowns Chino Mosqueda and Rafael Are to erase a 44-54 deficit at halfitme and turn the game around.

Yambing finished with 16 points and three rebounds, while Mosqueda posted 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Are tallied 12 points, two rebounds and two assists.

MPBLCommissioner Kenneth Duremdes said the tournament resumes at the FilOIl EcoOil Center in San Juan with a triplebill pitting Abra against Marikina at 4 p.m., Zamboanga against Bicol at 6 p.m. and Negros against Pasay at 8 p.m.
