Correct moves

LOOK who is spearheading the elaborately-orchestrated campaign to help the country’s millions of people whose cash and livelihood depend on the agriculture sector.

In the Philippines, which is very rich in natural resources, farmers, fishers and other farm workers and their families comprise the bulk of the more than 110 million population.

As concurrently secretary of the Department of Agriculture (DA), no less than President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. himself is leading the “gigantic undertaking.”

No wonder, therefore, that the Chief Executive from Ilocos Norte has been meeting with stakeholders from the private sector, urging them to help our farmers and fishermen.

Last Friday, Mr. Marcos met with the founders of Chen Yi Agventures, a local rice processing company that specializes in sustainable investing and rice processing technology.

The founders are French Patrick Francois Renucci and his wife Filipino-Chinese Rachel. The meeting was held at Malacanang.

In a Facebook post the following day, President Marcos pledged to study the company’s various recommendations aimed at helping farmers become more productive.

In October, the President also received a proposal from the Private Sector Advisory Council to explore supply chain optimization, techniques and digital agricultural practices.

We urge other quarters to join the nationwide campaign to improve the agriculture sector at a time when prices of everything are going beyond the reach of the poor.

And all the efforts of Malacanang to enhance the living conditions of the country’s beleaguered farm workers and their families, in our view, are correct moves.
