PDLs1PDLs2In a bid to alleviate prison overcrowding, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) released 423 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from seven correctional facilities across the country on Tuesday.

According to BuCor officials, the released PDLs had various reasons for their freedom, including completion of maximum sentence with good conduct time allowance, parole, acquittal, and expiration of maximum sentence.

Out of the total, 188 PDLs were released from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, 55 from Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in Abuyog, Leyte, 29 from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City, 11 from Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro, 33 from Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, 23 from Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan, and seven from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) prison facility.

Earlier this year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to release qualified PDLs in order to ease prison overcrowding.

He noted that many individuals were languishing behind bars due to their inability to afford legal representation.

BuCor, which operates under the administrative supervision of the Department of Justice (DOJ) as mandated by law, has been actively working to release eligible inmates to mitigate the issue of overcrowding in the country’s prisons.”
