PHILIPPINE business groups yesterday expressed their full backing to the Marcos administration in the midst of an “uplifting” economic performance.

“The recent release of the GDP (gross domestic product) numbers is very uplifting. I think we’re one of the highest,” said Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) President George Barcelon on the recent release of a report noting a 7.6 percent expansion of the economy.

“Actually, we’re highest in the ASEAN region, 7.6 percent, and we firmly believe under the leadership of President BBM that this will continue,” Barcelon added.

Barcelon said despite global headwinds faced by businesses, partnerships and policies instituted by the President could help bolster the country’s ability to sustain the economic momentum.

“So we’re very positive, and we are in full support of the short-term and the long-term plans of this administration,” he said.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nation’s (ASEAN) discussion on climate change, high fuel, coal and energy costs are timely because they subsequently affect food and other commodity prices, according to Barcelon.

For Philippine businesses, that’s one of the concerns because they import all of the inputs, the PCCI president said, adding it’s just a question of the degree of how this has been affecting different countries.

“The connectivity, the digitalization, all of these really are fundamental needs of all countries to improve their economy… So we look forward to that, working with our ASEAN neighbors,” Barcelon said.
