Abu bandit killed in Basilan raid

A HEAVILY-armed Abu Sayyaf bandit wanted for a number of atrocities and criminal activities in Mindanao was killed in a gunbattle with agents of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) in Lantawan, Basilan around 5 a.m. yesterday, PNP chief, General Debold M. Sinas said.

The PNP chief said two PNP-SAF personnel were also wounded during the operation in Barangay Baungis in Lantawan municipality which resulted in the killing of Poloy Hallag alias ‘Commander Heck.’

Sinas said members of the SAF’s 54th and 53rd Special Action Companies led the assault at the hideout of the suspect who, along with his relatives Amil and Ronie Hallang, is wanted for kidnapping-for-ransom and murder.

Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect were one M-16 automatic rifle and assorted live ammunition.

The two other suspects are still being hunted as of press time, he said.
