Fear is valid

AFTER claiming the lives of thousands of Filipinos, many of them senior citizens, the deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is still being feared by the people across the country.

This, despite the fact that we are seeing the steady decline in the number of people contracting the dreaded disease, which has infected millions of people throughout the world.

But without doubt, the fear is valid, knowing full the well that the pandemic continues to rampage in some countries, including the United States and China, where the virus originated.

Reports said the growing number of new COVID-19 infections could complicate China’s “dynamic clearance” ambition to suppress the pandemic as quickly as possible.

In the Philippines, many economists now see the recovery of the devastated local economy after concerned government authorities placed many areas under “Alert Level 1.

Under “Alert Level 1,” many business establishments and offices resumed operations.

“Pero nandiyan pa rin ang takot dahil baka biglang dumami na naman ang magkakasakit ng COVID-19 bunga ng pagdagsa ng tao sa mga shopping mall at iba pang lugar,” a village official said.

That’s the reason why many parents are still against the holding of face-to-face classes in elementary and high schools in areas where there are still COVID-19 cases.

Besides, they said, many of our countrymen are still unvaccinated despite government efforts to encourage people to have themselves inoculated against the disease.

In other words, let’s reopen the economy, but not at the expense of the health, safety and welfare of the more than 110 million Filipinos, notably the children and elderly.
