Zambo nips Valenzuela, Abra stuns Pangasinan

CALASIAO, Pangasinan — Zamboanga outlasted Valenzuela, 82-76, in overtime, and Abra subdued host Pangasinan, 83-75, in a pair of tight and exciting battles in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Season 6 at the Calasiao Sports Complex here Saturday.

Former MVP Jaycee Marcelino led the charge of the Master Sardines of coach Louie Alas as he finished with 26 points on 12-of-21 shooting and eight rebounds in 29 minutes of playing.

Rey Publico, Adrian Santos, Joseph Terso and Renzo Subido also stepped up for Zamboanga.

Publico added 10 points while Santos, Terso and Subido contributed eight points each.

Dennis Santos finished with 24 points on 5-of-11 from the three-point territory, while Orin Catacutan added 12 points and seven rebounds for Valenzuela of coach Jhon Velasquez.

Valandre Chauca contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

A tense battle ensued in the three minutes of the extra period, until Marcelino hit a turnaround jumper and Subido added two pressure-packed free throws in Zamboanga’s victory.

In the battle of newcomers, Abra emerged triumphant over Pangasinan.

Mark Tallo, John Lloyd Clemente and Prince Caperal led the Weavers in the win.

Tallo scored 14 points on 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, including the dagger-three that put them ahead by six points 81-75 in final seconds.

Tallo also had eight rebounds and seven assists in 26 minutes, while Clemente added 12 points for coach Jonathan Banal.

Caperal contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Hesed Gabo had a game-high 26 points on 10-of-17 from the field, five assists and four rebounds in 30 minutes of action for the Heatwaves of coach Jerson Cabiltes.

Chester Ian Melencio added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists while Michael Mabulac contributed with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Ed Daquiaog chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

MPBL founder Manny Pacquiao attended the opening ceremonies, along with Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes, CEO Joe Ramos, Head of Operations Emmer Oreta and legal counsel Atty. Glenn Gacal.

The MPBL resumes on Monday with a three-game offering pitting Bicol against Mindoro at 4 p.m., Marikina against Negros at 6 p.m., and Sarangani against Bataan at 8 p.m. at the Orion Sports Complex in Bataan.
