DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has backed out of the mayoral race in the 2022 national and local elections.

Mayor Sara posted on her Facebook account her statement and photos while she was in the office of the Commission on Elections withdrawing her certificate of candidacy.

“Ngayong hapon wini-withdraw ko ang aking kandidatura sa pagka-Mayor ng Davao City,” Mayor Sara wrote.

She announced that Vice Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte is replacing her. VM Baste also withdrew his reelection bid.

“Si VM baste ang papalit sa akin. Si Atty. Melchor Quitan ang nominado namin sa pagka Bise Alkalde,” Mayor Sara added.

The presidential daughter did not give further details on her next political plans but there are talks that she is contemplating to run for a national position.

Last month, her supporters urged her to run for president but she decided to take another term as mayor of Davao City.

The sudden change of political plans took after Davao City Information Officer, and a close friend of Mayor Sara, Jefry Tupas was allegedly involved in a drug raid in Mabini, Davao de Oro.

The deadline for substitution is on November 15.
