HONEY Sweet’ is a Korean romcom currently showing starring established Korean actor Yoo Hae Jin, who is a household name in their local entertainment scene best known for the films “Veteran” and “Luck Key”.

He now appears in his first romantic comedy, “Honey Sweet”.

In the story, he is Chi Ho, a geeky guy so devoted to his work in a confectionary company as a taster-researcher.

He is gifted with a sensitive palate that can develop great sweet confections that are all big hits with their customers.

But he is getting bored with his life as nothing much is really happening outside of his work environment.

The only people he relates with are his boss, Byeong Hoon (Jin Sun Kyu), who is quite self centered, and his older brother, Seok Ho (Cha In Pyo), who is irresponsible and a gambler.

But things brighten up for Chi Ho when he goes to a loan company for his brazen brother who has plenty of debts.

He meets a cheerful telephone operator and single mom, Il Young (Kim Hee Seon), and she makes his heart flutter.

By coincidence, they get to share a meal together and also get a taste of life they have never tasted before.

The movie is a lighthearted romance between a middle aged couple in their 40s.

It does not deviate much from the usual formula for romcoms where the two lead stars meet by chance and fall for each other, with them initially being opposites since the guy is an introvert and the gal is a hopeless extrovert.

The storytelling is well done in a sweet, endearing manner without being too sentimental or saccharine.

It’s really nice to watch how their relationship develops from being total strangers to romantic partners.

And also how the people around them eventually react and respond to their unexpected romance.

The lead actors both give endearing performances, but the actors playing Chi Ho’s jobless brother who always borrows money from him and his ambitious, egotistical boss, no doubt contribute their own flavor to the movie.

They play meaty supporting roles that have interesting stories of their own.

Also noteworthy is Han Sun Hwa, the actress who plays Eun Sook, Chi Ho’s younger friend and gambling partner who tries to restrain his developing romance with Kim, but later also finds her own one true love in the movie.

Yoo Hae Jin’s charming portrayal of his zany character in “Honey Sweet” will remind you of our own Comedy King, Dolphy, as they both deliver portrayals that easily captivate the hearts of moviegoers.

Kim Hee Seon is said to be a seasoned romantic comedy actress and she really stands out in her winning role as the bubbly and optimistic Il Young.

“Honey Sweet” is ably directed by Lee Han, who helmed Korean hits “Punch” and “Innocent Witness”.

The feel good movie’s dialogue is not too cheesy and the comic elements are all well woven into the film’s fabric.
