THE good news is that Germany, a favorite destination of Filipino nurses and other professionals, wants to hire skilled workers from the Philippines.

Note that this Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 million people is now teeming with highly-trained skilled workers, including young women.

Mostly products of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), these workers are in demand in the world market.

And why should Filipinos rejoice that the rich European nation is hiring more skilled workers?

“Exporting our skilled manpower, like electricians and hospitality workers, is a move in the right direction,” according to a jobless male nurse.

“It is certainly time to find new markets for our workers, including college graduates who have acquired new skills,” said a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

No less than visiting German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock relayed the “good news” to officials of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

Baerbock, who was in Manila last week, told DMW Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan that Germany had started the phased implementation of its “Skilled Migration Act.”

Under the landmark legislation, Germany welcomes the hiring of more skilled workers, like electricians and electrical engineers.

Records show that many ex-OFWs, including nurses and school teachers, are now graduates of TESDA’s various tech-voc courses.
