THE reported rescue of an injured Philippine eagle in Mindanao has thrust outfront the need to intensify efforts to protect the country’s endangered birds and animals.

Facing extinction include the monkey-eating Philippine eagle and tamaraw, which is found only in the island of Mindoro in Luzon.

In fact, many quarters, including the ordinary citizens, fear that many indigenous birds and animals in the Philippines face extinction.

Admittedly, the major culprits are the loss and degradation of their natural habitat, overhunting and worsening of climate change.

But Filipinos believe that this Southeast Asian nation is not yet on the edge of ecological disaster.

Hopefully, the recent rescue of the injured Philippine eagle, blinded in one eye, in the province of Sultan Kudarat will be an eye-opener.

“Sana ang mga tao ay magising na sa katotohanan na dapat magtulong-tulong ang lahat para protektahan ang endangered plants and animals,” an irate environmentalist said.

The Philippines, like other countries, will become a land where its indigenous birds and animals are just relics to be stared in dark museums.

It was first time that a partially blind Philippine eagle was rescued in the country.

Reports said that it was “blunt force trauma to the right side of the head…that caused the injury to the right eye” of the eagle.

Doubtless, the government deseves the support of the public as it tries to save its remaining exotic plants, birds and animals.

Kaya pa ‘yan!
